Learn how to Belt safely
You may have seen ads for auditions that say something like:
“Singers wanted for musical theatre production.
2 octaves g to g. Belting and legit.”
Legit refers to operatic quality. What is belting or belt voice?
Belting is that high loud voice quality you often hear when you listen to American Musical theatre, Pop, Gospel, , old school R&B, and rock and roll to name a few. Belting is exciting to listen to.
Belting is a voice quality that many classical singers and teachers tend to frown upon. When sung with a slightly lower larynx in a foreign language by a high powerful dramatic male voice it’s sometimes called Opera.
Belting can, when done incorrectly, endanger vocal health.
Belting is not dangerous if done correctly
Belting is not speech quality or chest voice taken up.
Belting is not driving the breath harder in fact because of the thickness of the vocal fold body cover and the long closed phase of the vibratory cycle, belting uses less breath than softer qualities
Belting is not difficult to learn.
